GLEP Statement on Whitmer, Nessel, Rice Attempt to Withhold Emergency Federal Funding from Michigan Kids

GLEP Strongly Opposes Efforts to Withhold COVID-19 Emergency School Funding from Kids Based on Where They Attend Class

LANSING – Great Lakes Education Project Executive Director Beth DeShone provided the following comment today, after Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Nessel, and state Superintendent Rice announced their plan to file suit, discriminate against, and withhold emergency federal funding from Michigan students based on where they attend school:

“The coronavirus did not discriminate based on the kind of schools Michigan kids attend, and neither did the Governor’s executive order shuttering every school building in the state.

“GLEP strongly opposes today’s attempt by Governor Whitmer, Attorney General Nessel, and Superintendent Rice to discriminate against and strip emergency funding from kids in the midst of a global pandemic, based simply on the schools their parents have chosen.”
